At first, we learn to read. Then, we read to learn.

Reading is the key to all learning.

Children who are good readers get off to a good start in school.

Children who are confident about reading have a positive attitude toward learning.

Reading Terminology

 

Phonological/phonemic Awareness – is defined as the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words

 

Phonics- is knowing that sounds (phonemes) and letters/letter combinations (graphemes) have a relationship

 

Fluency- reading quickly, accurately and with expression. It provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension  

 

Comprehension- is the complex process of constructing meaning from text
